Who can buy recreational cannabis in Canada and what is the minimum age?
The federal government of Canada has allowed provinces and territories to set their own minimum age to purchase adult-use cannabis. Alberta and Quebec have a minimum age of 18, while the minimum age elsewhere in Canada is 19.
How much cannabis flower, concentrate, or edible am I able to buy at a time?
You can purchase up to 30 grams, or 1.06 ounces, of dried cannabis at a time in Canada. The government has set equivalencies for one (1) gram of dried cannabis to equal five (5) grams of fresh cannabis, 15 grams of edibles, 70 grams of liquid, 0.25 grams of concentrate and one (1) plant seed.
How much cannabis flower, concentrate, or edible am I able to hold?
You can carry the above-mentioned quantities in public or in your vehicle, as long as cannabis is not accessible to the driver or passengers while moving. There are no current limits on how much cannabis you can have in your home.
Is there a limit to THC in edibles?
Commercially produced edibles are not part of the initial rollout of Canada’s adult-use regulations. This will be revisited in 2019. Residents may make their own in the meantime.
Where can I get adult-use cannabis?
Cannabis can be purchased in Canada from any approved retailer. Not all provinces or territories allow for storefronts, though residents and visitors may purchase mail order cannabis online from any federally approved online store. Check your provincial regulations for more information.
How does mail order cannabis work?
Canada has allowed mail order medical cannabis since 2001 and shipments via Canada Post will continue with the adult-use market. Proof of age for delivery of any cannabis product is required. You can place your order with an online retailer.

Am I able to fly in and out of Canada with cannabis?
No. Transporting cannabis outside of Canada is prohibited.
Am I able to smoke cannabis in public?
Public consumption of cannabis is not currently allowed in Canada unless it has been explicitly permitted by a local jurisdiction. Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta allow public consumption anywhere it’s legal to smoke tobacco, except in cars, on boats, and around places where children are often present. Check your local municipal regulations on whether or not the public consumption of cannabis is permitted in your area.
According to Parks Canada at campgrounds in national parks, visitors will be able to consume cannabis on campsites. Consumption is not permitted in campground common areas (such as playgrounds, kitchen shelters, washrooms, trails, or roads.)
Am I able to grow recreational cannabis in my own home/apartment?
The Canada Cannabis Act allows people to grow up to four (4) plants up to one (1) meter, or 3.28 feet, tall for personal consumption. However, residents in Quebec and Manitoba are not allowed to cultivate at home, and there are restrictions for those growing in Alberta and New Brunswick. Check your local provincial regulations before growing cannabis in your home.
Are all products in storefronts, delivery, or mail order tested for pesticides or other harmful contaminants?
Cannabis products for sale in Canada must be lab tested for pesticides and other contaminants according to International Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) standards.
What are the rules for driving with cannabis in Canada?
Driving under the influence of cannabis in Canada is prohibited. Passengers are not allowed to consume cannabis in a vehicle, either. Cannabis must be sealed and out of reach to drivers or passengers while transporting it in a vehicle. The penalties for driving while high vary by province.
Is there a minimum age to smoking or consuming cannabis products?
To consume adult-use cannabis, you must be at least 19 years old (18 in Alberta or Quebec). Medical patients younger than 18 may be given cannabis by a caregiver with a doctor’s recommendation.
